Name: Kirstie Imrie
Franchise: Maggie Moo Music

Why did you go down the franchise route? And why did you choose your franchise?

“I decided that franchising was the best route into business for me as I really wanted to start my own business to tie in with my family. I loved the low initial and ongoing costs with Maggie Moo Music. One of the many perks is that the ongoing fees are fixed so I don’t get hit by percentage royalties”.

What did you do before taking up a franchise?

Before becoming my own boss as a Maggie Moo Music franchisee, I worked as an Office Manager.

How did you raise the finance?

I was able to invest in this franchise thanks to my MR credit card.

What training and support did you receive initially and ongoing?

I was supplied with all the music downloads, operations manual and lots of reading material, as well as practical tips on how to operate the sessions. I had ongoing support from Moo HQ but the best part has been the support from the Facebook forum, with over 200 participants. The sharing of ideas, challenges and wins on here has been amazing .

What is a typical day for you as a Maggie Moo Music franchisee?

Each day I drop my 4 year old at day care and then I have a morning class with pre-schoolers at different preschools. In the afternoon I have my own classes with babies and pre-schoolers which I hold at community centres and at the local church hall. I pick my daughter up at about 2.30 each day which is great.

In the evening – I clean props and get sorted and tidied but now I have my routine this doesn’t take long at all. This is also when I look at emails and my Facebook page updating. I have been going for a year so it wasn’t always this busy . I’m running this franchise as an income producing business so this schedule suits me really well and I’m very satisfied with it.

What challenges have you faced?

I’m very particular about finding the right venue so looked around a lot until I found the right venues. I also had to experiment with class times till I worked out the most popular slots. Once I built parent loyalty it meant I had regular numbers in my classes.

Has becoming a franchisee changed your life, if so how?

Oh my goodness… yes, and 100% for the better. My daughter has blossomed as I don’t have to go to a conventional job and the farmer role has completely changed me for the better.

“It’s brought out the fun in me and a different side to me as I’m not naturally an extroverted person. I feel I’m a better Mum and person generally. It has become an integral part of my life and I’ve made new friends amongst the Mums.”

What marketing/promotional tools do you use to grow your franchise?

My Facebook page has been the most important in terms of marketing my business. So I have done paid advertising on Facebook, put fliers absolutely everywhere and, of course, benefitted from ‘word of mouth’.

What differentiates your Maggie Moo Music franchise from the competition?

I feel so fortunate to have the great strong brand that we have. It’s Farmyard themed and the characters of the Moo Croo are great; both the children and parents really relate to them The music is completely unique with 125 original songs to work with.

In addition to this, the franchise is very flexible; I have the freedom to create my own playlists from our songs and run classes as I choose. I don’t have to spend lots of money on equipment and props as the songs are written to allow a farmer to run a session prop free if they need to or want to. I think The Farmers Facebook group is very special in its support and general camaraderie.

In your opinion, what makes a successful franchisee?

I think being passionate about the business and the music is important. Like any business or franchise you have to be motivated to make it work. You have to be determined and not give up if you’ve had a bad day. You have to love children and be able to relate to parents.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of buying their first franchise?

“If you are considering franchising, I would recommend that you contact other franchisees to hear their stories.Ultimately, do your homework, ask lots of questions and research your area. Work out what’s important to you and check if the franchise can tick the boxes.”

What are your plans for the future?

My plans for the future is to expand further into my territory and take on employees and teachers. I really want to continue to grow my business.

Would you do it again?

YES! Absolutely!
