Brumby’s Goes ‘Low Gluten’

Australian Franchise News – 01-10-14

In response to high consumer demand for low gluten products, Brumby’s bakeries across Australia are firing up the ovens to bake their brand new recipe for a range of low gluten bread.

The new low gluten range of bread is baked fresh in store every day and contains less than 0.5mg of gluten per 100g (or 5.0ppm)* which is classified as ‘low gluten’ by the Australia New Zealand Food Standards Code.

While Brumby’s new range of breads are labelled ‘low gluten’ in Australia and New Zealand, under gluten free standards in other Western countries a product with less than 2mg of gluten per 100g (20ppm) would be considered ‘gluten free’.

Brumby’s Bakery General Manager Julie Bromley said Brumby’s was excited to launch the new range after recognising significant demand for fresh, low gluten bread.

“While there is growing awareness of coeliac disease in Australia, there is also a wider, ongoing demand for low gluten products from a variety of consumers,” said Ms Bromley.

“Brumby’s bakers make all their bread products fresh daily using traditional scratch baking methods, and we are excited to be complementing our range of preservative free loaves, artisan and specialty breads with a delicious freshly baked low gluten range of bread.”

The Australian Food and Grocery Council was supported by Coeliac Australia in the AFGC’s recent push to bring Australia’s gluten free standards in line with the rest of the World, and in a statement, Coeliac Queensland declared the ‘weight of scientific evidence supports 20ppm as a safe threshold of gluten intake for people with coeliac disease’.**

Ms Bromley said Brumby’s would welcome any changes to the standards, but in the meantime would comply with our current standards with the ‘low gluten’ category labels.

“We advise our coeliac customers or any other customers sensitive to gluten to consult a health professional before they decide if our low gluten range of breads is able to become a part of their daily diet,” said Ms Bromley.

Brumby’s low gluten range of bread comes in three tasty varieties – Plain, Basil & Garlic and Gourmet Winter Fruits – and is available in-store now. To find a Brumby’s store, visit www.brumbys.com.au.
