Cost-conscious Melbourne Cup office parties and post-race celebrations are expected to drive pizza sales by up to 30% on Tuesday 3 November as punters gather for the race that stops the nation.

As Australia’s second largest pizza maker, Eagle Boys is expecting to sell more than 140,000 pizzas this Melbourne Cup Day, up 30% compared to an ordinary Tuesday.

Eagle Boys Managing Director Todd Clayton said this Melbourne Cup Day was expected to be one of the biggest pizza-eating days of the year, along with State of Origin nights and school holidays.

He said the current economic climate had curtailed many of the usual extravagant Melbourne Cup office parties.

“We’ve already seen a surge in punters pre-ordering their pizza lunches and post-race snacks through our online ordering system at www.eagleboys.com.au.   In fact some customers have been so organised that they ordered and paid for their pizzas online 14 days before race day,” he said.

“This Melbourne Cup, Eagle Boys’ stores are expected to collectively use more than 19 tonnes of mozzarella cheese, 12 tonnes of pizza sauce and truckloads of toppings.

“While businesses have been reigning in their costs, they’re still taking time out to enjoy a Melbourne Cup office party and pizzas are ranking high on the menu.

“Many are planning on taking advantage of the fact that Melbourne Cup falls on Cheap Tuesday, when pizzas are discounted without the need of a coupon.”

Mr Clayton said Eagle Boys stores across the country had stocked up and put on extra staff to keep up with demand.

Cheap Tuesday is a big day for us anyway, but having Melbourne Cup on as well will see the ovens running constantly throughout the day.”

Eagle Boys Pizza is Australia’s second largest pizza maker and is 100% Australian-owned. It operates more than 280 franchised stores throughout Queensland, New South Wales, Victoria, South Australia, Western Australia, and the Northern Territory, employing more than 4,000 staff and making more than 16 million pizzas a year.
