Franchise entrepreneurs Jason Love and Mark Maumill, of Banjo’s Bakery fame, and first-time business owners Heath Jamieson and Jenny Wilmot have combined their skills and resources to take over the Mr Rental Altona store.
Mr Rental Altona is the first joint venture franchise for Mr Jamieson and Ms Wilmot but the third Mr Rental franchise, and thirteenth joint venture operation, for Mr Maumill and Mr Love.
Mr Jamieson said the Altona store provided the perfect opportunity to get started in the franchising business.
“I’d previously worked with Jason and Mark at one of the Banjo’s bakeries so I knew he would be a great mentor,” he said.
“Altona Mr Rental is an opportunity for myself and Jenny to learn about franchising from experienced entrepreneurs. We want to open more stores in future but we know we need some help from people who are already successful in the industry.”
Ms Wilmot said they looked at other franchises but the Mr Rental franchise suited their lifestyle the best.
“Obviously we heard about Mr Rental through Jason and Mark but we still considered a lot of other different franchises for example, we were looking at a bakery in Queensland,” she said.
“In the end, the Altona Mr Rental store fitted us perfectly family-wise because it was local, the full-time work hours still left the weekend free to spend with the kids and importantly for Heath to continue coaching the local Queenscliff footy team.” she said
Mr Maumill and Mr Love are joint venture partners in the Mr Rental South Australian franchise operation that currently has two Mr Rental stores open in Edwardstown and Arndale which opened earlier this year.
Mr Maumill and Mr Love also own ten Banjo’s Bakeries together in Queensland, Victoria and Tasmania. Mr Maumill said opening franchises as joint ventures reduced a lot of the risks of going into business.
“The idea is to complement your skills and expertise with someone else’s skill set ,” he said.
“This can be really beneficial if you align with people who enhance the operation of the business as well as reducing some of the financial obligations.
“We chose to take over the Altona Mr Rental store with Jenny and Heath because we believe they have the talent, the skills and the drive to make the business work.”
Mr Maumill decided to start franchising with Mr Rental after appearing as a guest speaker at the Mr Rental national conference in 2009 sparked his interest.
“After Jason and I won the MYOB Excellence in Franchising awards in 2008 and again in 2009 as the National Multi Franchisees of the Year General Manager of Mr Rental Alan Payne asked me to share my success story with Mr Rental franchisees,” he said.
“I was so impressed with the systems, the rental business model, how the franchises were set up and importantly the personal integrity of the Franchisors so I obtained more information, undertook our due diligence and soon after convinced Jason to invest in Mr Rental franchises that were opening in South Australia.”
“It’s been all go since then and we’re looking forward to rapidly growing our franchise network.”
Mr Maumill and Mr Love are continuing to build both their Banjo’s network and their Mr Rental through joint venture acquisitions.
Mr Rental Altona is currently located at 118 Queen St Altona, Victoria 3018 and is open from Monday to Friday 8am to 5pm.
The business will be relocating to a bigger site at 84 Old Geelong Road, Hoppers Crossing in the future.
