An Australian Franchisee Case Study
Name: John Moses
Location: Gosford, NSW
Franchise: Snap-on Tools
Why did you choose franchising?
Franchising allows me to use my skills and strengths alongside the franchisors’ brand and programs, to ensure a successful business. It is far more likely to be successful than if I was to attempt to operate a business on my own.
What did you do before taking up your Snap-on Tools franchise?
I was fortunate to work for the franchisor for 15 years before becoming a franchisee. This allowed me to have a good understanding of the franchisor’s products and programs.
How did you raise the finance?
Like most new business owners, I went to the bank cap in hand and raised the finance against my house.
What training and support did you receive initially and ongoing from Snap-on?
Initially I didn’t need much training or support as I had a good understanding of the business model and products. Even today, I don’t require much training or support as I keep abreast of new products and programs myself. Support from the franchisor however, is always available when needed.
What challenges have you faced?
The hardest challenge has always been to remain focussed and motivated at all times.
Has becoming a Snap-on franchise owner changed your life, if so how?
My franchise has been financially rewarding right from the start. It has allowed me to live a great lifestyle and therefore changed my life for the better.
What advice would you give to someone thinking of buying their first franchise?
A franchise is only an opportunity for the franchisee to grow a great business. The responsibility to grow the business is over to the franchisee – with the assistance of the franchisor. Make sure the franchise fits your skill base and go for it.
What are your plans for the future?
I am currently in the midst of purchasing a second Snap on franchise. I plan to sell both franchises in five years and sail around the world.
Would you do it again?
Definitely.
