Tell us a bit about yourself and what you were doing prior to buying a franchise business?

Prior to purchasing my APM franchise I was working as a receptionist in a School.

Why did you go down the franchise route? And why did you choose your franchise?

I loved what Aussie Pooch was doing for my dogs. I love dogs and thought I would be a good change.

How did you raise the finance?

Applied at our bank and got a small business bank loan.

What training and support did you receive initially and ongoing?

I was trained by Emily Slevin of whom I bought the areas as she was splitting and selling. Emily always made herself available should I need her help or assistance until I felt totally comfortable on my own. Steve Turner my Franchise Manager is always of assistance and very knowledgeable. AP Head office are also very supportive should you run into any difficulties.

What is a typical day for you as a franchisee?

Out in the fresh air dealing with beautiful dogs and lovely customers. Cant get much better really. And also being your own boss is a great advantage.

What challenges have you faced?

I haven’t really faced any challenges apart from dealing with difficult dogs.
Making sure I run my business as a success.

Has becoming a franchisee changed your life, if so how?

Definitely. I love being my own boss. Having the freedom to run my business in a way that suits my life and family. Working with dogs is the best!!

What is the most invaluable piece of advice you could give someone looking to buy their first franchise?

Remember this is your business and the success will only come with commitment and hard work. Only rewards can follow.

In your opinion, what makes a successful franchisee?

Love what you do. Treat your customers well. Speak how you would expect to be spoken to. Work hard and always look at ways you can improve yourself and your business. Have high standards. You are what the customer sees, you are the frontline.

What are your plans for the future?

I will continue doing as I am doing now with Aussie Pooch and stay in my business until I am ready to retire.

Would you do it again?

Yes for sure, wished I done it 20 years ago! It has taught me a lot about customers and customer service, how to set myself goals, feeling the satisfaction of being successful. I think to it has been good for my children to see hard work pays off.
