An Australian Franchisee Case Study

I chose to buy my franchise because I had Aussie Pooch come to bath my dogs and on seeing what a good service they provided I thought it would be a great career. Also, with a franchise, you have the security of that network around you and the back up and support to assist you in building a business, which you would not have venturing out on your own. I raised the finance to buy the franchise by remortgaging our house.
Most of my life I worked in an office, latterly I was a carer for my sister. When my husband was made redundant from his work, we decided it was time to do something completely different. The day we signed the papers my husband was offered another job, so I took on the franchise on my own, and have never regretted it.
The initial training that I received was excellent and has put me in good stead to grow my business steadily over the last 8 years. I am constantly receiving updated advice and assistance from our support office.
My greatest challenge was when circumstances forced me to be absent from work for 3 months. I missed my dogs so much in that time and couldn’t wait to be back in the saddle. When that time came it was very challenging for me, and a little traumatic, but I love what I do so much I just had to overcome my feelings and fears and get on with it. My wonderful dogs helped me tremendously to do just that.
Becoming a franchisee has changed my life. I have become more driven to succeed, a bit more competitive, and just want to be the best I can be. I have never regretted signing those papers. I am proud of what I have achieved within my business. Never before in my life have I enjoyed my work so much.
If anyone is thinking of buying a franchise I would say definitely go for it, give it all you’ve got. Do not enter into it half heartedly with the idea that now you are your own boss you can sit back and take time out. This would lead to sure disaster for your business. After all you only get out what you put in. With a little effort on your part, you can succeed.
I have just had my 60th birthday this year and probably should be thinking of retiring, but just cannot see myself doing that any time soon as I just know I would miss it too much. I guess I am a little addicted. Perhaps slowing down a little would be a good option, but we’ll see.
Would I do it all again – you bet your life I would. My only regret is I didn’t do it years ago, when I was younger and more energetic.
