McDonald’s Australia Limited is an unlisted Australian public company limited by shares. It’s a franchise business with more than two thirds of Australian restaurants owned and operated by individual businessmen and women. The remainder of the restaurants are company owned.

In 1971, McDonalds opened their first restaurant in the Sydney suburb of Yagoona.
 
In 1978, the first Australian Drive-Thru opened in Warrawong, New South Wales (NSW).
 
 In 1986, the 9,000th McDonalds restaurant opened in Sydney. 
 
The world’s first McCafe opens in Melbourne in 1993.
 
McDonalds Australia launched their flagship burger “The McOz” in 1999 in time for Sydney Olympics in 2000, where McDonalds was the official restaurant of the games, serving more than 1.2 million meals to athletes, officials and spectators.
 
In 2001, McDonalds celebrated its 30th birthday in Australia.
 
In 2003, the 100th McCafe opened in Australia.
 
Today there are over 780 McDonald’s across Australia, with around 85,000 people employed in restaurants and management offices.
