Mortgage Choice sponsors “Working Beyond Cancer Workshop”

According to the Cancer Council website, an estimated 114,000 new cases of cancer will be diagnosed in Australia in 2010. The survival rate for people with ‘common’ cancers has increased by more than 30% over the past two decades, with many of these working through or returning to work after their treatment. Carers can also be challenged with juggling their working hours and commitments.

 

 

 

NSW Mortgage Choice franchisees and employees who fundraised during 2008/9 for the NSW Cancer Council, through local and state fundraising efforts, were happy to see the dollars allow further assistance for survivors.

 

The two organisations worked closely togetherto determine the best use of the funds raised was to sponsor a new workshop series. An influential factor was the personal experience of a current Mortgage Choice employee who was diagnosed with breast cancer two years ago.

 

Annie Miller from Cancer Council NSW said, “Returning or continuing to work is a very important aspect of life for many people, not simply for financial rewards. It also provides a sense of independence, increased self esteem, and continued relationships with colleagues.”

 

Attendees to the free workshop were treated to knowledge-sharing sessions from counsellors as well as workplace, exercise and nutrition experts that were based on a variety of workplace related issues. These included: how to deal with practical and emotional issues around returning to work; how to make healthy lifestyle choices, plus what communication and legal advice would be beneficial in the transition back to work.
