Name: Gary Macfarlane
Location: Kingston, VIC
Franchise: Nanotek

Why did you choose franchising? And Nanotek franchise?
Because I wanted to be my own boss and the Nanotek (ecowash mobile) franchise provided great support. The way it was structured was appealing and the product and service I felt was really great.

What did you do before taking up a franchise?
I was the finance director of a commercial refrigeration manufacturing company that primarily serviced franchised businesses.

How did you raise the finance?
A Business Loan from my bank

What training and support did you receive initially and ongoing?
Upon commencement I received 10 days training that covered aspects of running your own business together with marketing, the brand and product terminologies and of course hands on training with the Nanotek (ecowash) products.

What is a typical day for you as a franchisee?
Everyday is different when you work for yourself and some days are longer than others. There is always a mix of hands on work, customer service and local marketing.

What challenges have you faced?
It takes time to build up your business, this is important to keep reminding yourself of especially when you are first starting out. Remaining positive and persistent in the initial stages is so important. If you believe in the product and take on board all the training and advice you will eventually see results.

Has becoming a franchisee changed your life, if so how?
Yes, I’m definitely able to spend more time with my family now and I can work the days and hours I want allowing me to be so much more flexible.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of buying their first franchise?
Think carefully about the business you are getting in to. Having an interest in the industry is important for keeping motivated, enjoying your work and gaining satisfaction. Look closely at the way the franchise is structured and talk to others who are in the business. Get as much information as possible before making your decisions and allow yourself a financial buffer particularly for the early phase.

What are your plans for the future?
Continue expanding the business and work towards having full time staff. This will enable me to concentrate more on the marketing and to achieve growth. It will then give me the opportunity to look at expansion into other territories.

Would you do it again?
I probably would, but maybe do it differently with regard to getting staff much sooner to enable quicker expansion and changing my mindset to the business. Remember any franchise needs to be investigated on its own merits and then carefully considered with regard to your own particular situation.
