Why did you go down the franchise route? And why did you choose your franchise?

I wanted to start up a business that had an established brand name, had a proven business system and suited my skill set and interest. Outside Concepts provided this and require on industry experience, large ongoing overheads and was relative cheap to purchase.

What did you do before taking up an Outside Concepts franchise?

Service manager for an International Consumer Appliance Company

How did you raise the finance?

Business Bank loan

What training and support did you receive initially and ongoing?

I initially received 3 days training at the head office on the computer program, business systems and building industry knowledge. Ongoing support was provided by the franchisor and other franchisees.

There is also an annual conference which we can share experience, year in review, additional training and new products.

What is a typical day for you as an Outside Concepts franchisee?

My day varies from following up leads, new quotes, site visits with our builder, ordering materials and building permits applications. There is never a typical day but tasks that need to be done on the day.

What challenges have you faced?

The biggest challenge was starting the franchise to become profitable, increasing my own industry knowledge, finding a local builder which I could work with and shares the same vision for the business and establishing client referrals.

The unique local challenge is dealing with the local council which can test your patience at the best.

Has becoming an Outside Concepts franchisee changed your life, if so how?

Since becoming a franchisee owner I have been able to reduce my personal working hours to allow more leisure and family time. My life is now more flexible and less stressful compared to the corporate world which I left.

What marketing/promotional tools do you use to grow your franchise?

The main marketing tool which I use the Hipages.com.au to provide leads at a minimal cost. The other great source of leads and sales is return clients and referrals from clients so customer service is paramount to the growth of the business.

What differentiates your franchise from the competition?

I’m able to offer a one stop shop for the clients projects with personalised customer service without the additional cost. Projects on time, on budget with all compliances.

In your opinion, what makes a successful franchisee?

The franchise may give you the tools but, the person behind the business makes it successful with their passion.

What advice would you give to someone thinking of buying their first franchise?

Choose a franchise that suits your skill set and an industry you have a passion for. Understand, it requires hard work to establish a business a franchise only makes the odds becoming successful easier.

What are your plans for the future?

I’m still unsure as it still enjoy my current work and seeing projects from concept to a finished product and comfortable with my life style. Only the future will tell.

Would you do it again?

Given the same circumstances, yes in heart beat.
