Name – Matt Sparkman
Location – South Australia
Franchise – Step into Life Golden Grove
Why I chose franchising
I have been involved in several Franchises over the years, and I believe in a strong brand with a solid, proven reputation in the market place. I do not mind paying Franchise Fees if the State and Head Office structures are pro-active.
What I did before taking up a franchise
I was an Account Manager for New Balance in South Australia, and an ABA Coach for the Under 20 Division 1 Men and the ABA Men for North Adelaide Rockets.
How I raised the finance
I told my parents about my proposed new venture, and that I had an appointment with the NAB, and he next thing I knew, they handed me the cheque to buy the business. This is well and truly paid off 3 years on.
The training and support I receive from my franchisor
Step into Life SA, Master Franchisor, John Pidgeon has been very solid, my Franchise has been operating smoothly for a couple of years now, so our contact is limited to a phone call or visit per week. But any question or query has been satisfactorily answered or solved by John (and now Amy too).
The challenges I have faced
Other user-groups on the oval, poor staff and trainers within my business, lighting at the venue, the condition of the oval. Battling wet and icy weather comes with the nature of the business too.
My advice to someone thinking of buying their first franchise
Do your research on your territory first – if it looks sound, back yourself and believe in yourself 100% and go hard. You cannot have an ‘Off-button’ for the first two years – this will determine your success.
My plans for the future
To buy more Franchises in different industries and have multiple income streams operating from solid franchise systems.
