In the competitive world of coffee, Retail Food Group (owner of the Donut King, Brumby’s, Michel’s Patisserie and bb’s cafe brands) has proven it’s a sip above the rest, with two of its best baristas crowned among the best coffee makers in Australia.
At the Australian Barista Championships, Central Coast local Mitchell Faulkner (RFG NSW Barista Trainer) was awarded first place in “Coffee in Good Spirits”, which required competitors to make two identical Irish Coffees using a whisky of their choice plus coffee and cream and two identical signature beverages which include any alcoholic drink and coffee of the barista’s choice.
Michel’s Patisserie Victorian Barista Trainer Simon James, based in Camberwell in Victoria, was crowned runner up to the Detpak Barista Champion of the year.
The two winning baristas will travel to London in June to represent Australia.
Retail Food Group Manger Franchised Operations Deane Priest applauded the big win and said the baristas’ achievements were testament to their commitment, dedication and passion to their job.
“In the competitive world of coffee baristas that can make a captivating cappuccino or a luscious latte are valuable assets, so we are thrilled to have them on our team,” he said.
“We work hard to develop the skills and proficiencies of our Donut King, Michel’s Patisserie and bb’s cafe baristas – from making the best soy macchiato and double short black to the perfect skinny latte.
“I would like to congratulate Mitchell and Simon. We are very proud to acknowledge the commitment and dedication they have shown to their profession. We are thrilled they will be travelling to London later this year to represent not only RFG, but also Australia in the world barista championships.”
Mr Priest said the win demonstrated RFG’s commitment to deliver quality coffee to its customers.
“RFG prides itself on having the best of the best working on its coffee,” he said.

With 20 years of experience internationally, Instaurator is author of the internationally renowned book, The Espresso Quest, and is the President of the Australasian Speciality Coffee Association.
